A man shot during an Ohio County resident's efforts to help an Indiana Conservation Officer was declared dead this afternoon, Monday, Feb. 20, at Dearborn County Hospital, said Indiana State Police Public Information Officer Stephen Wheeles.

After an assignment to Kandahar Air Force Base in Afghanistan from July 2009 to January 2010, Major Samuel C. Chipman, a 2000 Rising Sun High School graduate, was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross (With Valor) Dec. 14, 2016.

In the absence of one councilman, Rising Sun City Council declined to vote on a request to amend Rising Star Casino's planned unit development to add a storage building.

On the ground in Afghanistan, Combat Controller Rob Gutierrez had suffered a punctured and collapsed lung. He and his Special Forces team were pinned down and taking fire from the Taliban despite repeated attacks on the enemy from air support.

The Rabbit Hash General Store is rising from the ashes of a February fire, and, with assistance from an Indiana structure, is retaining its listing on the National Register of Historic Places.
