Rees Harps, located in downtown Rising Sun, has something to harp about, so to speak.

The company's harp sales puts it in the top three harp companies internationally, said Garen Rees, son of founder William Rees, 65. Professionals worldwide play Rees harps for recordings and concert performances.

The first day of the 2016-2017 school year went well at Rising Sun Ohio County Community Schools, reported RSOCCS Superintendent Branden Roeder.
“Knock on wood, it was very smooth,” said Roeder, who also is serving as Ohio County Elementary Middle School principal this year.

Powerboat racing on the Ohio River will take place Saturday, Aug. 13, and Sunday, Aug. 14, at the 2016 Rising Sun Regatta.

The races are viewable from the Rising Sun Riverfront Park along Front Street, and the free event includes kids' activities, arts and crafts, food, commercial vendors and more.

Members of the Rising Sun High School Shiner Band participated in band camp last week prior to the beginning of school Monday, Aug. 1.

The band camp started Monday, July 25, and continued through Friday, July 29. Musicians practiced marching routines as well as music under the direction of Jacob Rowe and instrument section leaders.

The Ohio County Community Foundation recently celebrated its 18th anniversary with a celebration dinner Friday, July 22. The celebration took place at the Schroeder Building located at the fairgrounds in Rising Sun.

A new ferry connecting Rising Sun and Rabbit Hash could be on the way as proponents continue to take steps towards making it a reality.
