$1.25M awarded for Ohio County, & RS road work

Ohio County and Rising Sun were among 396 Indiana cities, towns and counties receiving state matching funds for local road projects through the 2017 Next Level Roads: Community Crossings Initiative.

Ohio County will receive $750,000 and Rising Sun will receive $501,357.75, Gov. Eric J. Holcomb and Indiana Department of Transportation Commissioner Joe McGuinness announced Wednesday, Sept. 20. Switzerland County was awarded $869,850.

The funds require a 25 percent match, but both county and city set aside funds in their budgets to provide the required matching amounts.

The combined state funds amount to $150 million, according to the announcement.

Superior local roads are a key factor in maintaining Indiana’s reputation as the Crossroads of America,” Gov. Holcomb said. “I am encouraged that a record number of communities applied for and received funds this year, and I’m grateful to lawmakers for increasing the funding to sustain the community crossings initiative.”

In these first two years, the Community Crossings Initiative has awarded nearly $300 million in state matching funds to local governments for road construction projects. This year, 467 communities applied for funds – a 48 percent increase from 2016 – making this year truly competitive, said the announcement.
