Rising Sun Police Chief dies in crash

Rising Sun Police Chief David Hewitt died in a single-vehicle crash this morning, Wednesday, Feb. 13, according to Switzerland County Sheriff's Office.

A member of Rising Sun Police Department since 1998, Hewitt had been an officer with the Switzerland County and Dearborn County sheriff's offices, as well as Lawrenceburg Police Department.

Hewitt, 49, Florence, Ind., was driving at 7:20 a.m. when he crashed on Ind. 56 near Spring Branch Road south of Vevay, said a release from the Switzerland County Sheriff’s Office. He was flown by air ambulance to Carroll County Memorial Hospital, Carrollton, Ky., where he died of his injuries.

An avid outdoorsman, Hewitt was appointed Rising Sun police chief in 2004.

Rising Sun Mayor Brent Bascom ordered all flags in Rising Sun be lowered to half staff and remain there for 27 days, one day for each year of service Chief Hewitt gave to the citizens of our area.

“On behalf of the City of Rising Sun, I would like to extend our sincere condolences to Chief Hewitt's family. I ask that everyone please respect the privacy of Chief Hewitt's family and that we keep them in our thoughts and prayers as they deal with this tragic loss,” said Bascom.
